Voicing your opinions

Health and Social Services Councils were set up by Government to represent the views and opinions of the public. There are four Councils in Northern Ireland with local offices currently based in Ballymena, Lurgan, Belfast and Omagh.Councils are independent from those who manage and provide health and social care.

Our main functions are to:

bullet point Act on your behalf to improve the range, type and quality of services
bullet point Continually monitor the quality of local services
bullet point Represent public opinion about changes to existing services and the introduction of new services
bullet point Find out what people think about services
bullet point Provide you with sources of information on health and social care issues
bullet point Offer advice and help if you wish to complain about a service.

Use your voice to help us

We are independent and work on behalf of individuals and local communities. We help you to make your views known about services or improvements you think may be needed in your area. We monitor these services and talk to local groups to make sure that important issues are raised:

You can help us by:

bullet point Telling us what you need from health and social services
bullet point Letting us know if you are not satisfied with the care you or others have received.
bullet point Giving your views on proposed plans and changes to services.

If you want to become involved, you can attend any meeting of your local Health and Social Services Council. You may also be invited to give your views on local issues through group and public events and surveys.

Alternatively, you might wish to become a member of the Health and Social Services Council.
