Activities: Equality

Like all public bodies we are committed to the effective promotion of equality of opportunity and good relations in all our policies and practices. Our task then is to think equality in all aspects of our work at whatever level we interact with people. So what are we doing?

  • Staff and members are trained on the statutory equality duties and on promoting good relations
  • We are included in the NHSSB's staff attitudes survey which is seeking views on a range of staff-related issues, including attitudes towards the nine categories
  • We are a partner in the Northern Area Equality Best Practice Forum and meet regularly with Board and Trust colleagues to examine the way forward and share learning
  • We are involved in the Good Practice Review 'Promoting Positive Staff Attitudes to Diversity'. This will examine practice in this area by engaging with representatives of the nine equality categories in an effort to find what is best practice. Reviewing the problems and identifying areas for improvement will help us draw together a number of recommendations or proposals for implementation across the HPSS

"Having due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity between certain different individuals and groups."

  • We are involved in the production of a CD ROM for the Chinese community. This will provide an introduction to basic English language in everyday situations such as health centres, restaurants and supermarkets
  • We critically assess each new policy to ensure that it complies with our statutory equality duties
  • We offer our documents in alternative formats
  • We continually try to make our services more accessible
