Tribute to Former Chairman

It is with much fondness that staff and members alike remember the life of Hugh Ewing. As a member of Larne, Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey District Health Committee since 1978 it was only natural that Hugh would seek appointment to the Northern Health and Social Services Council when it was established in 1991. In 1995 Hugh was elected Vice-Chairman and in 1997 became Chairman.

For many years health and social care activity was a significant part of Hugh's life. Hugh was forthright and direct in his approach and was never afraid to speak up on behalf of people in an attempt to influence and improve service provision. When his term of appointment was up in November 2001 it was with much reluctance that Hugh said farewell to fellow members and staff.

He still kept in touch, however, and saw a new challenge and opportunity to represent people with the formation of Local Health and Social Care Groups. On his appointment to the Board of the East Antrim Group he spoke of the opportunity to effect change from the 'inside'. Unfortunately he never got that chance! Hugh passed away at the first meeting on Tuesday 25 June 2002.
