A Message from the Chairman

I was delighted to be re-elected Chairman of the Northern Health and Social Services Council in November 2005. With the support of George Kernohan, who was elected Vice-Chairman, we have the onerous task of leading the Northern Health and Social Services Council through a period of immense structural reform within the Health and Personal Social Services.

One of the reforms is the replacement of the four Health and Social Services Councils (HSSCs) with a Patient and Client Council (PCC), described by the then Health Minister as a “powerful single health and social care users body”, from 1 April 2008.

While such change takes place we must maintain focus on our role and function to represent the interest of the public on health and social care issues.

I said at the Joint Council Conference “let’s grasp the opportunity with both hands and make a valuable input towards the design of the new PCC to achieve the best outcomes for our population.” This is exactly what I and colleagues have and will continue to strive to do as the necessary legislation is written.

I am encouraged by, and indebted to, the loyalty of members and staff who are committed to the emergence of a stronger body to champion patient and user rights.
