The Northern Health and
Social Services Council joined forces with the other three HSS Councils
to respond to a recommendation within the Department of Health,
Social Services and Public Safety consultation on A Strategy for
Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections in Northern
Ireland 2005 – 2010. An exercise named Bugwatch took place
in acute hospitals in each of the Council areas. This involved a
team of NHSSC members and staff observing and reporting on hygiene
and related procedures.
Areas under scrutiny
in Causeway and Antrim Hospitals were hand washing facilities and
usage, waste disposal, sharps disposal, general cleanliness of the
ward and the provision of information on hygiene for the visitor/patient.
Tom
Creighton, NHSSC Chairman, commented
“It
was important to make patients, hospital visitors and the public
aware of the facts and their part in helping to prevent the spread
of infection. Healthcare acquired infections can be present in all
healthcare facilities, not just hospitals. We began our surveys
in a hospital because the public often feels most concerned about
the possible risks there. One of the outcomes we would like to see
from the Strategy being developed is relevant and targeted information
being produced for patients and the public.”
